Colorectal cancer is the 4th most common cancer in Nigeria, and its incidence is increasing. Early-onset colorectal cancer cases (cancer diagnosis in those younger than 50 years) are also rising. The Colorectal cancer (CRC) screening and early detection program at the Redus Center for Digestive Health aims to identify precancerous polyps or early-stage colorectal cancer in asymptomatic individuals, reducing incidence and mortality.

Screening is recommended for average-risk individuals starting at age 40 by the Society for Gastroenterology and Hepatology in Nigeria, due to the relatively young age of colorectal cancer diagnosis in Nigeria.

  • Average-Risk Individuals (Age ≥40, no family history) → Routine screening.
  • High-Risk Individuals (Family history, genetic syndromes like Lynch syndrome, IBD, or previous polyps) → Earlier and more frequent screening.

Services offered for screening include:

  • Endoscopy
    • ColonoscopyThis is the Gold standard for colon cancer screening because during this procedure we can detect and remove polyps to prevent their progression to cancer. It is done every 10 years if normal and the patient is at average risk.
  • Stool-Based Tests
    • Fecal Immunochemical Test (FIT) – Detects blood in the stool; done annually.
    • Stool DNA Test (e.g., Cologuard) – Detects DNA mutations and blood; done every 1–3 years.
